The delegation of LYMEC, present at the ELDR congress in Palermo, was successful in getting their proposals adopted by the delegates of European liberal parties. Most notably the congress adopted a resolution on a topic the European liberal youth organization has been fighting for during the last year in the Deletion, not blocking campaign: No internet censorship infrastructure by European governments.
The young delegates took an active role in the debates about the theme resolution on the EU-budget and the others resolutions on a wide variety of topics, such as fundamental freedoms and human rights, European democracy and European economy. The delegation succeeded in convincing ELDR congress to reject a financial transaction tax and EU-leverage on VAT.
Furthermore LYMEC resolutions calling for action against the worrying newly adopted undemocratic constitution of Hungary and the alarming situation in Ukraine also have been adopted.
LYMEC President Alexander Plahr comments: “The successful results of our delegation at the congress of our mother party show that young people actively participating in politics has an added value for defining future policies. We managed to convince the ELDR on opposing internet censorship infrastructure and succeeded in calling for a reform of the EU-budget instead of rising it, by phasing out the subsidies of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).”
The congress furthermore saw the election of a new ELDR President: Sir Graham Watson (LibDems) will lead the European umbrella organization of liberal parties from now on. The ELDR Party also elected five Vice Presidents. While Marc Guerrero (CDC,), Lousewies van der Laan (D 66) and Leoluca Orlando (IDV) were re-elected for another term; Alexander Graf Lambsdorff (FDP) and Astrid Thors (SFP) are new additions to the ELDR Party Bureau.
Plahr comments: “LYMEC congratulates all those elected. We look forward to continuing the close cooperation as the programmatic engine of ELDR, together striving for more freedom in Europe. We are furthermore extremely happy that with Sir Graham one of the founding fathers of LYMEC now is leading ELDR.”
