Last week a delegation of the LYMEC Bureau met European Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström. They exchanged views on data retention, the common European Asylum and Migration System and the other areas Commissioner Malmström is involved in on behalf of the European Commission.
LYMEC President Alexander Plahr states: “For us as young liberals it is very important to get the opportunity to exchange views with members of the European Commission. We hope to feed them with fresh liberal ideas. We are very happy that Commissioner Malmstöm gave us a warm welcome and was open to discuss her policies with us.”
“We as LYMEC clearly communicated to the Commissioner that we demand the data retention directive to be scraped. Putting 500 million citizens under general suspicion is just plain wrong. LYMEC and ELDR have a joint position on this: This directive has to be withdrawn!”
The LYMEC delegation also pleaded for more awareness in privacy issues regarding the Passenger Name Record agreement with the US. Furthermore they spoke about the importance of the Schengen zone for free transport and trade within the European Union.
