This weekend over 130 young liberals, including delegates from over 30 national
organisations and individual members from across Europe gathered in a windy Copenhagen,
Denmark to participate in LYMEC’s biennial Electoral Congress.
Operating under the theme of the EU digital agenda, the Congress was opened by the
Danish Economic Minister Margrethe Vesager, with a video message from Sir Graham
Watson MEP, President of ELDR.
Elected to the Bureau were Jeroen Diepemaat as President, Vedrana Gujic as Vice-
President, Anne van der Graaf as Treasurer and Claudia Benchescu, Igor Caldeira, Sissel
Kvist and Ed Sanderson as Bureau Members.
Commenting on what promises to be an exciting and important time for European liberalism
over the next two years, culminating with the 2014 elections to the European Parliament,
Jeroen said: “LYMEC should be a critical force within the liberal family that strives for its
ideals. The sovereign debt crisis is still not over, it urges us to fight for the rights of our
generation on the path to recovery. Also we need to fight for the important right of freedom in
Europe, which seems obvious for many but is not for some.”
Aside from the elections, a diverse range of policies were lively debated at the Copenhagen
Business School including the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, the political situation in
Syria, the European Fiscal Compact and the environmental protection of the Arctic area.
Social activities were also held including an evening event at the offices of Radikal Ungdom,
and a farewell and thank you dinner on behalf of outgoing President Alexander Plahr, Vice-President Mette Lykke Nielsen, Treasurer Matilda Flemming and Bureau Member Mireira Huerta i Sala.
The next Congress will take place in Sofia, Bulgaria in November.
