The European Liberal Youth (LYMEC) welcomes the reduced mobile phone charges within the European Union. From July 1 the costs of calling across borders have gone down and a truly European mobile market has come one step closer.
LYMEC President Vedrana Gujic: “When travelling within the European Union I can now call home for 5 minutes costing me less than 1 Euro. This huge drop in prices is one more step to a connected Europe. LYMEC strives for market integration and welcomes a truly European mobile communications market.”
The European Commission has reduced roaming charges step by step and is slowly creating a European mobile operator market.
European leaders have been reducing roaming charges gradually since 2007, with the aim of wiping out the charges within the next few months.
Roaming charges have often caused ‘bill shock’ for many travellers who forget to turn off their mobile data, leaving their phone open to costly charges.
Neelie Kroes, the EU telecoms commissioner, said: “This huge drop in data roaming prices will make a big difference to all of us this summer.”
