On the 4th of April 2020, the European Liberal Youth (LYMEC), the youth wing of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) Party, held its first ever digital online electoral Congress. The organisation planned to have its Congress in Skopje, North Macedonia but unfortunately the world pandemic prevented it from happening.
The Congress that gathered nearly 150 young liberals from across Europe elected Antoaneta Asenova, as LYMEC President for the 2020-2022 mandate. Antoaneta Asenova is a Bulgarian national, living and working in Brussels. She was nominated by her youth organization, Youth MRF.
‘’The COVID-19 crisis is a challenge in many different levels: health, economy, but also – democracy. The anti-liberal measures taken by some governments challenges the belief in a democratic Europe. We need to rise up to the challenge and be vocal of what we stand for and I will work for this as LYMEC’s new President.” said the newly elected President in her acceptance speech. Working close to the new President will be Dan-Aria Sucuri (LUF, Sweden) who was elected as Vice President at the Congress. The congress also elected Marten Porte (JD, Netherlands) as Treasurer and the following Bureau members Ines Holzegger for Outreach and Cooperation officer (JUNOS, Austria), Laia Comerma for Events and Trainings officer (JNC, Catalonia), Marina Sedlo for Policy Officer (Julis/LHG, Germany) and Ida-Maria Skytte for Communications officer (SU, Finland).
The Congress also approved the finances of the organisation for the financial year 2019 and we are happy to welcome two new member organisations in LYMEC – the Young Swiss Green liberals joined as associate members and Uppreisn from Iceland became a full member organisation.
