From 29th of October to 1st November over 130 LYMEC members and guests gathered in Helsinki under the topic “Energy Security” in Europe.

Fringe meetings prepared participants for the congress topic

Thursday afternoon and Friday morning dozens of participants had the opportunity to listen to several conferences on several issues regarding the overall congress topic. The Paris COP 2015 on Climate, and the opportunities and challenges of biofuel were discussed, as well as the relation between security of supply and the Common Agricultural Policy. LYMEC Bureau organized a fringe under the title How are we heating up? giving a general overview of European energy politics.

The congress had intense discussions on asylum politics

During the congress itself, that took place from Friday afternoon to Saturday evening on a ferry between Helsinki and Stockholm, members discussed the semi-annual Report, Bureau members’ and Secretary General’s reports, as well as the finances of the organization. In the later part of congress, LYMEC members discussed and approved several resolutions. Young Liberals called for a harmonized common EU asylum policy and defended the provision of courses towards the professional integration of refugees. Foreign policy was also subject to further discussion, with Syria and the relations between the EU and Russia having the spotlight. Rural economies and sustainability formed another important part of the debates, which included as well a resolution on youth unemployment with a focus on market-oriented education and entrepreneurship.

LYMEC calls for safe route for refugees

This congress was also marked by an action that shows our concerns over the causes, conditions and consequences of the current refugee crisis. LYMEC is supporting the Let them fly campaign for safe routes for refuges with planes or boats. We call the European institutions and Member states to find a more humane, effective and long term solution for the handling of asylum seekers and refugees.
