Liberal Ideas for Europe

This European Liberal Forum seminar will precede the LYMEC Spring Congress and will debate different ideas for Europe. By providing participants with a combination between a political philosophical approach (unusual in political events) and a hands-on political approach, we aim to shed new light on how knowing where our ideas come from can help us become better debaters and can help us improve our policy proposals in our respective contexts. This seminar will also take participants through the ideas of different parties and challenge them to try to find ways to shape a liberal message for Europe.   Session topics Topic 1: Setting the stage: Defining liberalism in the 2020’s Topic 2: Presentation of the electoral manifestos of different parties Topic 3: Presentation of the ALDE manifesto Topic 4: Discussion on how to shape a unified liberal message at the European level   Tentative, draft programme Thursday 4.4 12:00-15:30 Arrival 15:30-15:45 Welcoming speeches; 15:45-16:15 Setting expectations; 16:15-17:15 Political philosophy lecture: “Where does liberalism come from and where is it today?” 17:15-17:30 Coffee break 17:30-18:30 Round table on Open Society values: “The ethics of liberalism”. 19:30 Dinner   Friday 5.4 8:00-9:00 Breakfast 9:00-10:30 Workshop: “Shaping the liberal message: winning the debate” 10:30-11:00 Presentation of the electoral manifestos of a diversity of political organisations 11-11:15 Coffee break 11:15-12:15 Discussion on how to shape a unified liberal message at the European level 12:15-13:00 Presentation on the ALDE manifesto 13:00-13:30 Workshop on the ALDE manifesto and brainstorming on campaigns 13:30-15:00 Lunch   The fee for the seminar is 20 € to be added to the Congress fee (so a total of 150 Euro for Seminar + Congress).
