Liberal Communicators' Network - youth edition 2024!

From 28 to 30 June 2024, the yearly Youth Edition of the Liberal Communicators' Network took place in Lille, France!

The first day was inaugurated by Tamás Toplak, Head of Communications at the European Liberal Forum. Following his opening remarks, participants were introduced, showcasing a diverse group with varied regional backgrounds and different skill levels that positively influenced the dynamics from the outset. This year, LYMEC aimed to create a unique environment for young communicators to grow personally and collaboratively. By integrating theoretical sessions and active encouragement, they sought to inspire the group in their journey toward becoming communication experts.

Tamás Toplak led the first training session, "Branding on a Budget". Utilising organisational branding as a case study, he illustrated the European Liberal Forum's branding transformation. Tamás emphasised the importance of a deliberate and thorough evaluation of organisational needs before embarking on a branding process. The day's second session, "How are digital tools impacting democratic challenges?" was facilitated by David Vidal Sans, Press and Communications Advisor at the European Parliament. David addressed contemporary communication trends and threats such as artificial intelligence and disinformation. His session provided a platform for participants to engage in discussions about these critical issues. One participant noted, “I am a policy person, but now I understand how to switch my frames (glasses) when discussing these topics as a communicator”.

The lively and vibrant discussion highlighted the participants' impressive knowledge, critical thinking, and how they had already bonded as a group. The first training day concluded with an address by Boryana Atanassova, Senior Regional Communications Manager at FNF ESEE. She recounted the origins of the Liberal Communicators Network, exciting the group about alumni opportunities and inviting their input on enhancing the network's lasting impact. The discussions extended from the conference room to the dinner table, setting a high level of anticipation for the second day.

The second training day transitioned the previous days theoretical input to practical application. Following a morning kickoff that set the day's tone with Dimitra Papadopoulou, LYMEC Communications Officer, the objectives of the Umbrella Challenge were introduced. Adapting to participants' needs, the organisers framed the "Your best (and worst) moments" session as an "LCN Consulting Group" exercise. Participants were divided into three groups to consult on personal/organisational branding, content creation, and maintaining consistency in a communications plan. This session proved highly beneficial, yielding many solutions tailored to participants' needs. The final agenda item showcased the impressive projects from the Umbrella Challenge entries, with Oliver Poyser from the United Kingdom winning this year's challenge! Overall, the first two days of the Liberal Communicators' Network 2024 Youth Edition were marked by dynamic learning, insightful discussions, and practical applications, leaving both organisers and participants eagerly looking forward to the group being active alumni.
