LYMEC  condemns the so called Spanish “Gag Law”. President Vedrana Gujic is indignant: “If this law is approved it will legalize the abuse of human rights. The right of assembly and peaceful disobedience are European core values that are endangered by the massive rights given to police and government. No individual can tolerate such breaches of their basic citizens rights.”
The new law allows the police to massively fine people for things as recording police, carrying out assemblies in public spaces or simply meeting in front of the parliament. The police would be allowed as well to do random identity checks and external bodily searches. The government could even prohibit protests if they think public order would be disrupted.
Vedrana Gujic points out that it is a shame that the government of an EU member state tends to believe that they will end the economic and social problems in their country by forbidding its people to speak about them in public. Instead of developing new ideas on how to make people remain silent they should come up with ideas on how to shape their future.”
