Last weekend, over 100 delegates congregated in Bucharest, Romania for LYMEC’s (European Liberal Youth) Autumn Congress. Being the last Congress before the important EU elections next year, participants took the opportunity to discuss and approve our Manifesto ,“Future First”, which states our position on institutional reform, cyber politics and investment in the youth of Europe. Planning for the elections also took place, and best practice and campaign ideas were shared.
The Congress was opened by LYMEC President Jeroen Diepemaat and Christian David, PNL Member of the Romanian Senate, who both spoke of their huge opportunity liberals have in the coming elections and the optimism and belief every liberal should be feeling.
Resolutions on issues such as asylum and common defence policy, fishing in Western Sahara waters and the right of the Catalan population to decide their own future were discussed. In addition fringes on topics as diverse as the international arms trade, democracy and human rights in the South Caucus region and the expansion of the European Union were held.
LYMEC is also proud to announce that Congress voted to approve European Youth of Ukraine as a Full Member, and Jeunes Radicaux de Gauche of France as an Associate Member. We welcome both organisations into our liberal family.
The next Congress will take place in Zagreb, Croatia in June 2014 when a new Bureau will be elected.
