The Victory of Europe as an Idea:
a brief review of the 2019 elections!
Elections were held across Europe and the result was clear. Euro-skepticism is at bay and the idea of Europe is well alive and strong among Europeans. The New Parliament is composed of 751 places of which 538 are taken by moderate and pro-European citizens.
That is a weight that makes three-fourths of the chamber.
And if that is not enough, let me review some of the results in major EU countries.
In the UK for instance, the country of unending Brexit, the party with said name managed only to channel the increasing and bitter sentiment of revolt. A sentiment that all in the country and also in Europe are feeling about the whole process. But on the contrary, the Liberal Democrats were the only existent political party that had a good result. Making the number of MEPs pass from the outstanding Madam Catherine Bearder to more than eighteen new members.
In France, the nationalists had a worse result in comparison with previous elections going from 25 to 23 percent. At the same time, a party with a positive agenda that supported structural reforms maintained the same result of before. Moreover, we should not forget that this, contrary to the Presidentials was not a binary choice between moderation-radicalism.
In Germany, lastly, yet again Conservatives lost votes in seven percent. Greens, following an overall trend of moderation in politics, took a higher position and were in second place. On the contrary, Alternative for Germany was expected to have a great victory. Nonetheless, it gained in one or two regions but lost in the same capitals of these ending at a representative fourth place.
And all this leaves us then to that solid conclusion.
That the choice was clear in an alternative that believes in the European Project. A project with all that it is and not in the multiple and constantly regurgitated plans of Communists and Populists the same of a "different project" or of a "Europe of Nations", who knows what those left and right romantics actually mean.
That the majority of European Citizens believes in the stability of their institutions, the gravity of their hymn and the freedom of their flag. Irrespective of the different political options and colors they think best for the future.
And, thus, that the idea of "Us" against "Them" of Eurosceptics (sometimes and unfortunately some do not realize also used by some institutional players) can, at last, be replaced by a de facto productive debate on important matters.
That Europe is strong again!
Long live the European Union!
