The European Liberal Youth - LYMEC were delighted to host young leaders from the South Caucasian countries of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia last week in Brussels.
This meeting provided a valuable opportunity to discuss key youth policy issues, including civil society, human rights, and media freedom. Discussions focused on the broader impact of Russian interference in the region, particularly in the areas of election manipulation, and the rise of illiberalism.
Russian disinformation campaigns continue to shape public opinion and influence policymaking throughout the South Caucasus, fostering distrust in democratic institutions and hindering the efforts of Civil Society Organisations to have their voices heard. Additionally, the government has implemented restrictive measures, such as the Foreign Agents Law, posing a threat to NGOs and independent media by suppressing critical voices.
This delegation strongly advocated for greater engagement with youth organisations, and the political activation of young people through education. Corruption and election fraud have significantly hindered democratic progress in these regions. In response, young activists have turned to social media as a powerful tool to counter propaganda and mobilise protests against illiberal measures.
Despite these challenges, the youth remain determined to build a more just, democratic, and inclusive future for their countries.
