Today, we welcome the democratic choice of the Moldovan people, who have voted for a future in the European Union. With a narrow but decisive YES vote in the constitutional referendum, the citizens of Moldova have shown that democracy, human rights, and the rule of law will always triumph over external interference and authoritarian pressure.
We, as European Liberal Youth, have stood and continue to stand alongside our Moldovan friends, advocating for their rightful place in the EU. This referendum marks a historic step towards a better united, stronger, and freer Europe—one where the values of liberty, equality, and democracy prevail.
As Ion Bulgac, CUB Junior (Moldova) President noted,
"This result is a strong indicator that our country needs a coalition government and more unity and consensus internally, in the very complicated context we are living in. With a fragile majority, this vote sends out a double message: Moldovans want to join the European Union, but they have significant concerns about the instruments applied by the current ruling government."
We commend Moldova for this courageous decision and urge for continued vigilance as we move forward. It is vital that the upcoming presidential elections see even greater voter participation and transparency, with more independent observers to protect the integrity of this historic journey, given the reports of attempted election tampering efforts on the part of Russia.
The future of Europe is being built by its people, and today Moldova’s voice has been heard. Together, we are shaping a future defined by hope, freedom, and opportunity for all.
