For a long time LYMEC insisted on  an EU mechanism on democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights, applicable to all member states. We stand firm in our support to making this process ambitious and effective, while connecting the monitoring to a rule of law conditionality.

Already with the Manifesto for the European elections, the young liberals all over Europe insisted that the corner-stone values of the EU should be protected through an EU mechanism on democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights, applicable to all member states. We were delighted that the liberal Commissioners Vera Jourova and Didier Reynders delivered on the ambition to start up the rule of law process. Today the European Parliament voted on its own view of establishing an EU mechanism. We stand firm with the Renew Europe group’s rapporteur Michal Simecka in the demand for even more ambition including the monitoring of the principles of democracy and fundamental rights, a proper institutional agreement as basis of the process and concrete Union measures, including budgetary rule of law conditionality where issues persist.
