2025 has been a fantastic year for Libertas. With countless incredible articles, and new forms of content having been published, the LYMEC publication has gone from strength to strength. Now, as we enter a new year, it is also time for a new team to take the helm at Libertas.
The structure of the publication is changing a bit, so take a look at the details below and see if the new team could include you!
Editors
There will be no more than 4 editors in the 2026 Libertas mandate.
As an Editor, you will be expected to attend regular meetings (at least once per month) and to take an active role in sharing and promoting Libertas both within LYMEC and beyond.
In addition to this, you may be asked to perform other tasks by the Editor in Chief, such as proofreading and editing, reaching out to MOs and interview subjects, and taking on responsibility for a particular subject portfolio. Extra tasks will depend on your background and abilities - you will have a chance to shape your own role!
You do not need prior experience in order to apply, but you must be a Member (including IMS) of LYMEC, and you must be confident in your level of written English.
Managing Editors
New in the 2026 mandate, there will be 2 Managing Editors of Libertas, who will serve as deputies to the Editor in Chief.
In addition to attending all Libertas meetings and contributing to the work of the publication, like the other editors, you will also have some further responsibilities, such as managing larger projects, overseeing the work of the Editors, and stepping in for the Editor in Chief as and when required.
The full responsibilities of the 2 Managing Editors will be decided by the Editor in Chief upon their appointment.
You do not need prior experience in order to apply, but you must be a Member (including IMS) of LYMEC, and you must be confident in your level of written English.
Editor in Chief
The Editorial Team needs a leader, and that leader could be you! For this role, we would expect a time commitment of at least 2 hours per week, although you will have some flexibility to shape the role. Your duties will include:
- Chairing monthly meetings of the Editorial Team and supervising their work
- Proofreading and editing articles, and working closely with the Policy Officer to ensure that articles comply broadly with the Policy Book
- Liaising with the Bureau about the wider management of Libertas
- Liaising with the Secretariat to ensure publication of articles on the LYMEC website and social media
You do not need to have previously been a member of the Editorial Team, but you must be a Member (including IMS) of LYMEC, with an excellent standard of written English and ideally some experience in the areas mentioned above (writing, managing team meetings, and/or editing and proofreading).
Although the position of Editor in Chief is not an elected Bureau position, it is still a highly visible role within LYMEC, as it involves handling potentially sensitive data and information. Responsibility and discretion are therefore important parts of the role.
Why should I apply?
Getting involved with Libertas will give you a chance to shape the future of the publication. As an Editor, you will have the opportunity to improve your writing, editing, and communication skills in English. As a Managing Editor or as Editor in Chief, you will have the chance to take on responsibility for the whole magazine and the people who work on it. You will develop your editing and proofreading skills and you will broaden your expertise over a wide range of European policy areas.
A Libertas Bootcamp will be organised in June 2026 for writers and editors with an interest in skills development. Applying editors are expected to participate in this training, which is designed to strengthen writing quality and editorial judgement.
What are we looking for?
Most of all, we are looking for enthusiasm. Libertas is an important part of LYMEC, and we are always looking for ways to improve it. Commitment is also important - you should be prepared to work closely with the team and to take your role seriously. You do not need to be a native English speaker, but you must be confident in using English to communicate.
