The European Liberal Youth (LYMEC) notes with concern the increasing migratory pressure on the European Union’s southern external border, particularly in the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla.
The effective protection of the European Union’s external borders is a prerequisite for preserving the integrity of the Schengen Area and maintaining citizens’ confidence in a common European migration and asylum policy. Member States at the external border must receive the political, operational and financial support necessary to fulfil this responsibility.
LYMEC calls for the full implementation and enforcement of the European Union’s migration and asylum framework. Irregular entry into the European Union cannot become an alternative to the legal migration and international protection systems established under EU law.
We further call upon the Kingdom of Morocco to fully comply with its commitments under existing agreements with Spain and the European Union, including close cooperation on border management and the prompt readmission of Moroccan nationals who are subject to legally enforceable return decisions.
The European Union and Morocco have developed a strategic partnership built on political dialogue, economic cooperation and mutual support. Such a partnership must remain founded on mutual trust, reciprocity and the faithful implementation of all commitments undertaken by both parties. Continued progress in EU–Morocco relations, including within the framework of existing cooperation agreements, depends on both partners acting in good faith and delivering on their shared responsibilities, particularly in the field of migration management.
At the same time, LYMEC reiterates that an effective migration policy must combine secure external borders with respect for the rule of law, international obligations and the fundamental rights guaranteed by the European Union.
A credible European migration policy requires responsibility, solidarity among Member States and effective partnerships with neighbouring countries. LYMEC therefore supports further strengthening Frontex, enhancing cooperation with partner countries and ensuring that EU migration rules are consistently applied across all Member States.
