Our members at the Lithuanian Liberal Youth (LLY) have released a statement following recent protests sparked by the Lithuanian President’s troubling actions and disregard for democratic principles.
In the statement, LLY voices strong concern over President Gitanas Nausėda’s public endorsement of former Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas, despite corruption allegations and an earlier criminal conviction related to abuse of office. Paluckas’ delayed compliance with his court-ordered sentence raises serious questions about the rule of law and electoral fairness in Lithuania.
The President’s questionable support for Paluckas, coupled with condescending and dismissive remarks made by his advisor toward LLY - later publicly endorsed by the President - has called into question his political neutrality and respect for civil society.
In response, LLY mobilised a protest of over 1,000 citizens, youth leaders, and activists, demanding accountability, transparency, and a public apology from the President's office. The demonstration represented a powerful stand for integrity in public office and for the role of youth in shaping democratic societies.
LLY continues its commitment to democratic values and youth activism in the face of political pressure and misrepresentation.
