Our members at the Lithuanian Liberal Youth (LLY) issued a statement in response to growing concerns over political interference in Lithuania’s public broadcaster, LRT.
Recent legislative proposals, rushed through parliament without proper consultation, risk weakening institutional safeguards that protect media independence, transparency, and accountability. These developments have triggered large-scale public protests and raised serious questions about compliance with European democratic standards and the European Media Freedom Act.
LLY stands firmly against any measures that undermine press freedom or concentrate political control over independent media. In a context of broader political instability, populist rhetoric, and repeated attacks on cultural and journalistic institutions, these proposals represent a clear warning signal. While framed as technical amendments, they contribute to a gradual erosion of democratic norms and reduce public trust in governance.
As a youth political organisation committed to liberal democracy, LLY has actively mobilised to defend free speech, support journalists and cultural actors, and ensure public awareness beyond the capital. This statement explains the political context, outlines the risks at stake, and sets out why international attention is essential.
