Regulating the Digital Age: Where Should Europe Draw the Line?

Add to calendar:

Welcome to LYMEC's Fringe Event Regulating the Digital Age: Where Should Europe Draw the Line? taking place during the ALDE Party Council in Dublin, on November 13.

About the Event

Social media is rapidly reshaping how Europeans communicate, access information and participate in public life. As Europe debates the future of digital regulation, the question of where to draw the line is becoming increasingly urgent.

LYMEC has been advocating for a safer, more democratic and rights-based digital environment for young people for years. With the European Commission’s recent proposal to restrict social media access for children under 13 and introduce stronger safeguards for under 15 year olds, alongside President Macron’s proposal for a minimum age of 15, the debate has gained new momentum at both the European and national levels.

These policy suggestions makes the discussion particularly timely: how should Europe regulate social media while protecting young people, fundamental rights and democratic participation?

The panel will also explore what these changes mean in practice for politicians and political campaigning in an increasingly regulated digital environment.
