FLRY (the International Federation of Liberal Youth) and LYMEC (the European Liberal Youth) today call for the release of Azerbaijani politician Yagidar Sagidov. Sagidov, the political adviser to the chairman of the main Azerbaijani opposition party, Musavat, was arrested on 26 June on a charge of assaulting a war veteran. However, it is widely accepted that this charge was falsified by parts of the state-controlled media because of Sagidov’s opposition to the government and campaigns for democracy and human rights, particularly in the south of the country. Sagidov is currently held in the Kurdakhani prison.
IFLRY and LYMEC believe that the actions of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party threaten the freedom and prosperity of Azerbaijani citizens, and the spurious arrest and inprisonment of Sadigov, who has campaigned against the corruption and aggressive nature of the current political regime, is another body blow to freedom. We hope that the Sadigov’s potential trial is halted as soon as possible, and the international community pays greater attention to the basic rights that are being diminished in Azerbaijan.
